A special weekend workshop with Margaret Bennett - July 26, 2010

Celtic Song Weekend at ECOTAY with Margaret Bennett
Sat.- Sun., August 7- 8, 2010

O teannaibh dlùth 'us togaibh fonn
(O sit closer and let us sing a song)
To celebrate Perth Scotland’s 800th anniversary, the Ecotay Education Centre is presenting a special song workshop weekend led by Margaret Bennett - renowned Scottish writer, folklorist, storyteller, ethnologist, broadcaster and singer. Travelling here from Perthshire Scotland where her song weekends are a legendary part of the cultural landscape, Margaret will lead singers of all ages and levels through a variety of Scots, Gaelic and Irish choral pieces. A Saturday evening ceilidh will showcase all participants as well as other invited guests.
Born on the Isle of Skye, Margaret Bennett comes from a long line of Scots. Her mother a Highlander and her father a Lowlander, she was brought up in a household where singing, playing music, dancing, storytelling and ceilidhs were a way of life as were traditional crafts. Margaret claims that growing up “steeped in tradition” schooled her best, especially at her grandparents’ home in Uig. She relates to Sir Walter Scott’s reference to his childhood where he was “fed with the legendary lore of the Borders as with a mother’s milk…”.   Margaret has tasted both Highland and Lowland in her childhood and youth and has never lost her appetite for either.
After graduating from Glasgow College of Education, Margaret followed her father to Newfoundland where she took her first teaching job. Soon afterwards, she completed a BA in education and a MA in folklore at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Then, after working as an ethnologist at the Canadian Museum of Civilization she returned to Scotland to work in the Scottish Education Department where she set up a unit for children with learning disabilities and developed a curriculum that included many aspects of folklore such as singing, dancing and music. She later lectured in Scottish ethnology for eleven years at University of Edinburgh, during which time she completed a PhD in this subject. She also became an honorary research fellow at the University of Glasgow.
As a singer, Margaret has produced several CD’s and has appeared at key folk festivals in Scotland, and many in North America including Mariposa, Atlantic Folk Festival and National Folk Festival of America. She has enjoyed residencies at Pinewoods; the Appalachian-Scottish Summer School at East Tennessee State University; Warren Wilson College, North Carolina; and the Augusta Heritage Centre, West Virginia.
Her prize-winning books include Oatmeal and the Catechism (1999), The Last Stronghold:  Scottish Gaelic Traditions in Newfoundland, (1989), and Scottish Customs from the Cradle to the Grave, (2004). CD collaborations with her late son, Martyn, feature in theatre and film, (including ‘The Black Watch’).
She is the recipient of many prestigious awards including master music maker Award (1998); Exceptional Celtic Woman Award (2003) and Honorary Life Member of the Traditional Music and Song Association of Scotland (2007).  Just two weeks ago, Margaret was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama thus joining the ranks of Lord Richard Attenborough, Annie Lennox and Billy Connolly among others
In the words of the late Hamish Henderson, internationally distinguished poet and folklorist, “Margaret embodies all that is best of the spirit of Scotland.”
Visit her at www.margaretbennett.co.uk

More good news about Mòd Canada 2010 judging panel - July 9, 2010

Comunn Gàidhlig Ottawa is very happy to announce that Cathy Ann MacPhee will be one of the principle judges at our Mòd Canada 2010 event this year. In addition to judging at our Mòd, Cathy Ann will also be delivering a singing workshop and performing at several venues in and around town--stay tuned for more details.

Catherine Ann MacPhee is universally regarded as one of the most gifted and engaging singers of her generation. Born on the Outer Hebridean island of Barra- of it she says “There are islands famous for their pipers and islands famous for their singing. The Barra of my childhood was definitely a singing island”- she grew up surrounded by Gaelic song and culture and got her first inspiration from her grandmother. Her natural talent was quickly recognised and at 17 she was asked to join the first Gaelic Touring Company- Fir Chlis (Northern Lights). This led to an offer to work with director John McGrath’s theatre company 7:84 and for four years she toured the world, her singing of traditional Gaelic song assuming an important role in his plays. Through her increasing exposure to non-Gaelic audiences she landed a contract to record for Greentrax Records and her debut album “Canan nan Gaidheal” remains, nearly fifteen years later, one of that labels best sellers and is regarded as a milestone in the growth of interest in Gaelic culture. Cathy Ann has also appeared countless times on BBC television as an actress and presenter of Gaelic shows. Cathy Ann is now based in Ottawa, and travels to various festivals teaching language and song.

We are honoured and pleased to have her at Mòd Canada 2010 and to have her continuing support and involvement in Comunn Gàidhlig Ottawa.

First Mòd Canada 2010 Judge announced - July 8, 2010

Comunn Gàidhlig Ottawa is very happy to announce that Joy Dunlop will be one of the principle judges at our Mòd Canada 2010 event this year. In addition to judging at our Mòd, Joy will also be delivering a singing workshop and perfoming at several venues in an around town--stay tuned for more details.

Joy was born and raised in the rural village of Connel in Argyll, Joy was immersed in Gaelic culture from an early age, regularly participating in local Fèisean and Mòds where she won acclaim for both her singing, dancing and enthusiasm for the music and language. She has held the full time post of Gaelic development officer in Argyll, Bute and the Islands for An Comunn Gàidhealach since graduating from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in 2004 with an honours degree in Gaelic Language and Culture and the Anna NicDhonnchaidh prize for promoting Gaelic in the community. Joy is well known for her commitment and dedication to the promotion and development of Gaelic and for her involvement in a wide range of activities aimed at raising the profile of the language.

A popular language teacher, Joy has taught courses for Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Clì,CNSA and local Gaelic organisations, and also works as a translator and simultaneous interpreter. She gained a distinctive international perspective through a sabbatical as Gaelic Instructor-in-residence for Fèis Mhàbu, Cape Breton, in 2007, and through working with communities in New Zealand promoting and developing Gaelic language and song in 2008. These experiences have made her a popular guest speaker and MC for events and conferences both in the UK and abroad. Joy is also a highly sought-after local and national Mòd adjudicator for both Gaelic language and music competitions.

In her singing career so far, Joy has won numerous illustrious awards. Several times the lead vocalist of winning traditional groups at the Pan Celtic International Festival, she was also runner-up in the festival's International Traditional Song competition in 2005. Winning the Oban Times Gold Medal and Puirt-a-Beul competitions at The Royal National Mòd (2006), the prestigious Oran Mòr competition (2007) and twice being runner-up in the Gold Medal series (2007, 2009) have confirmed her status as one of Gaeldom's most promising performers. A regular on the traditional music circuit, Joy is equally at ease entertaining home audiences at local cèilidhs as performing at major festivals. In recent years, she has also appeared at Celtic Connections (Scotland), Celtic Colours (Canada) and Schotland Festival (Netherlands) and has toured the Highlands & Islands extensively with Scottish harpist Rachel Hair and guitarist Paul Tracey. 2010 will also see the release of her debut album Dùsgadh (Awakening).

In addition to her solo work, Joy is also heavily involved in Gaelic choral music as the conductor of Còisir Cheann an Tuirc, the award-winning Argyll male voice choir, and as a member of the infamous Argyll ladies’ choir Atomic Piseag, who have also enjoyed impressive Mòd successes. She is both Gaelic tutor and active member of CòisirGhaidhlig Taigh an Uillt (who swept the boards at the National Mòd in 2007 & 2008 in the Sheriff MacMaster competition under her tutelage) and is one-quarter of Dealrach, an Argyll-based female quartet who won gold on their first-ever outing at Mòd 2008.

Not confined to her vocal talents, Joy has also enjoyed competitive dance success, most notably, Traditional Inter-Celtic Dance Champion at the 2006 Pan Celtic Festival. Currently, she is in high demand at workshops and festivals worldwide and she is always eager to meet dancers of all genres with whom to swap steps and styles. She has a particular interest in the link between step dancing and Gaelic puirt a beul (mouth music) and has explored this successfully in bothScotland and Nova Scotia.

Lately, Joy has become an increasingly familiar face in Gaelic broadcasting, most recently appearing on MG ALBA's Bliadhna Mhath Ùr show for Hogmanay 2009 and STV’s primetime magazine programme The Hour. She has featured in music programmes Guthan nan Gàidheal, Sorcha nan Reul, Bheir dhomh am fonn and Ar n-Aran Làitheil, (which she also presented) and has been a guest speaker on current affairs programmes Cunntas and Barail Bhoireannach. She made her acting début in the BBC comedy PC Alasdair Stiùbhart and also featured in television specials Na Piseagan (BBC) and Festival Bound (Equator HD-Canada). A popular columnist, her writing has been commended at both the Scottish Press Awards and Highlands and Islands Media Awards and this, combined with regular stints on Reidio nan Gàidheal, has raised her profile as a new Gaelic voice.
